The Track Field

Another less than exciting name but it does what it says on the tin!

Following a successful trial growing sunflowers on the farm in 2022, we decided to expand the trial this year to a larger area.

The sunflowers were planted when the soil had warmed up in May (a little later than we had hoped!)

We are part of a group of farmers trying to expand the area of sunflowers grown in the hope we can one day produce UK grown sunflower oil.

We are still a way off this goal and for now our sunflowers will most likely go to produce bird feed.

The sunflowers have had no artifical inputs other than a small amount of fertiliser to help them establish which makes them a low cost, environmentally friendly crop - and of course the bees and insects love them!

Our biggest worry is how late the harvest may be! We hope to harvest in late September before the weather turns and fields begin to get muddy so we are keeping our fingers crossed for lots of sunshine before then to help them ripen!
